Coffee berries are also known as ‘Coffee cherries’. They are small round fruits, the size of a grape and they grow in clusters along the branches of the coffee plant. There are two main shrubs that produce coffee cherries around the world they are: coffea arabia and coffee robusta.
The fruit surrounding the coffee cherry is well known for its benefits, and has been consumed by many cultures for centuries. “Qishr” is a tea made from coffeeberries and is very popular in the Middle East. Some cultures even consume the fruit raw, or after boiling and drying.

They have two seasons: spring and summer months.
How coffee berries looks like
The coffee bush is a shrub in the Rubiaceae family, it has long and dark green leaves with beautiful white flowers and a scent similar to jasmine. Coffee berries are the fruit of the coffee bush and consists to the fruit pulp and two coffee beans wrapped in a silvery film and a husk. The skin of the fruit is smooth and shiny with a bitter flavor, while the flesh is sweet, tender and juicy. In the center of the fruit are two blue-green seeds, which are fresh form of coffee berries. Sometimes from a natural mutation the coffee berries will have only one bean inside, which is called a ‘Peaberry’ and is said to produce a sweeter and more flavorful coffee.
How to grow coffee berries
Coffee bushes from the age of 3 or 4 are ready to bear fruit. The berries reach maturity after 9 months and have a dark-red colour. The bushes are mainly grown in the shadow of other plants, like banana trees that protects the bush from sun and wind.
