The name Frankincense is derived from the term “franc encens” which is French for “high quality incense.” “franc” means “pure” and “encens” comes from “to burn.” It was considered a “pure incense” and known to be the most desirable of the incenses. The aroma is woody, earthy and spicy.

Frankincense is usually grown in the dry, mountainous regions of India, Africa and the Middle East. Frankincense essential oil is made from milky white sap that is secreted by the Frankincense tree. When the tree’s sap droplets dry and harden into tear-shapes on the tree, this process takes a few days. The dry droplets are scraped off of the tree to be made into an essential oil. The earliest known source is the country of Oman. They shipped the oil to regions like the Mediterranean, India and china for thousands of years.

In the past they used to burn the incense in sacred places and in religious rituals, there was a powerful aroma and white smoke coming from the Frankincense when its burned. It was used in perfumes, cosmetics and Egyptian mummification methods. It is believed its fragrance will bring good health, cleanse the home and purify clothing.In Ayurvedic medicine, Frankincense is referred to as “dhoop” and is used to soothe wounds, relieve joint discomfort, balance hormones in women and purify the air.

How the essential oil is extracted.

The tear-shaped droplets are crushed into powder and placed in an oil bath. After it undergoes steam distilation or CO2 extraction, it makes the essential oil.
