What is reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It’s a simple, safe and natural method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that anyone can use. It’s a form of alternate medication called “energy healing”.
Reiki is made up of 2 Japanese words, Rei- Gods wisdom or the higher power and ki- life force energy, it’s a spiritually guided life force.
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating beneficial effects like relaxation, security and wellbeing. The technique to learn reiki is not taught but transferred to the student by the instructor. It is passed during an attunement given by a reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy”.

A little history
Reiki was rediscovered in the mid 1800’s by a Japanese born buddhist monk, Dr Mikao Usui. While teaching in a college Dr Usui was asked “How Jesus facilitated the healing miracles that he performed?”. The question sparked Dr Usui’s interest and set him out on a path for an answer. He was determined to learn the secret miracle healing so he may aid others on his journey which took him too many countries. On his journey a great spiritual energy came down and enlightened Dr Usui, the energy also brought Reiki Ryoho (the ability to heal). To Usui reiki was a spiritual practice, an opportunity for anyone to awaken their true nature. He taught Reiki Ryoho to many people and adjusted his teaching to each person.

Reiki Symbols
Traditionally there are three main symbols in the Usui Reiki healing system. On paper these symbols are flat, two dimensional but they are actually multidimensional. You draw these symbols in the air, with your hand or fingers. It’s up to you, everyone is different. Usui used the symbols as a way of grounding and centering for his students.
- The Power Symbol- Cho Ku Rei symbol
Some practitioners like to draw the symbols clockwise, instead of counterclockwise. It is up to you, both are equally valid and powerful. This symbol is very powerful and usually drawn in three strokes. It is for empowering, cleansing and protecting.
- The Mental/Emotional (Harmony) Symbol– Sei Hei Ki symbol
This symbol is drawn with 9 strokes and its main purpose is to bring emotional balance, peace and harmony. It helps to balance the left and right brain hemisphere.
- The Distant/Connection Symbol– Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol
It is called a Connection symbol because it goes beyond space and time, it connects everything across the universe. It is used for Distant healing, by sending reiki to someone who lives on the other side of the world from you. You can also send reiki to yourself in the future where you know you could use the help, like a surgery. You can also heal past traumas, relationships and emotional/spiritual effects of past events.
4. Reiki Master Symbol– Dai Ko Myo symbol
Also known as “all purpose healing” symbol and “empowerment” symbol. Its intention is enlightenment and also helps heal our karma.. It is the symbol that heals the healers by combining the power of the harmony, power and distance symbols. The symbol is used by reiki masters only when attuning intentions.
Master symbol is not included with the three main symbols in The Usui Reiki healing system but is still used by reiki masters and is still as powerful as the other symbols.
